Nick Joliat Haunting vibey songs, impossibly graceful coordinated shredding. Plus some nice sonic youth-y guitar sludge. Favorite track: The Intendant.

about

The self-titled release from bassist and composer Henry Fraser’s polycephalic seven piece ensemble, The Full Salon charts a circuitous course of seven songs that share more than their author. The Full Salon is a surprising corollary to Fraser’s work as an improvising double bassist, focusing instead on song form, lyricism, and the dichotomy between earnest melancholia and discordant catharsis. The Full Salon oscillates between these two poles throughout the record, transcending the trappings of genre towards a unified, deeply personal, whole. Through heartbreak in “Painted Beauty”, transcendence in “Apocatastasis”, the dichotomy is encapsulated in Fraser’s haunting tribute to a lost loved one, “Human Possibilities”.

This album is playful yet incredulous regarding musical categories, viewing them through “The Full Salon” colored glasses, which is to say, the incredible work of these musicians. Nine in total, The Full Salon’s members have been collaborating in various contexts for as long as a decade, in such bands as Ryan Power, Bloar, Tredici Bacci, and Maestro Day. It is these long standing relationships, musical and otherwise, that have fostered the vulnerability required for this kind of experimentation.
